Project: Girls in the Hall
Grantee: Bay Area Teen Voices
Grant Year: 2000
Through a grant of $15,000, the Three Guineas Fund assisted Bay Area Teen Voices (BATV) in the development of the pilot Girls in the Hall. The BATV organization is an alternative education program serving disadvantaged young women in the San Francisco Bay Area. Girls in the Hall is an innovative educational campaign designed to raise awareness of issues facing incarcerated girls through a public art exhibit and accompanying programs. By allowing incarcerated girls to work as artists (in video, audio, photography, and dance), Girls in the Hall serves to open the discussion of what happens to girls in trouble to the broader community. This project represents a unique collaborative effort known as Solutions between BATV, the Youth Guidance Center, Special Programs for Youth, and Brava for Women in the Arts. Girls in the Hall provides an opportunity to develop a model that may be adapted in other cities. BATV is an affiliate of the Boston-based
Teen Voices.
