Project: Sisters 4 Science
Grantee: Project Exploration
Grant Years: 1999 and 2000
With the capital granted by the Three Guineas Fund, the organization will begin development of a web component and offer an expanded curriculum in the program's second year. Sisters 4 Science (S4S) is an after-school program for Latino and African-American middle-school girls that combines leadership development with interactive studies in paleontology and natural science. One of the goals of S4S is to place 50% of participants in residential field science programs each summer. By encouraging girls to explore natural science in a safe environment, Sisters 4 Science is helping girls to develop self-esteem about their thoughts, feelings, experiences, and decisions. The Three Guineas Fund originally granted $15,000 to Sisters 4 Science in September of 1999 and made a second grant in May of 2000 for an additional $15,000.
