Project: 5 Girls
Grantee: Television Race Initiative
Grant Year: 2000
5 Girls is a
national community engagement project that uses the 2001 broadcast premiere (a
P.O.V. Fall Special, on PBS) of a new documentary as the catalyst to focus
attention on strong, resilient girls, and what they need to thrive in their communities. With a $25,000 seed grant from the Three Guineas Fund and the support of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, foundations, community based organizations, educators, and media professionals, the project is designed to trigger a national dialogue about -- and focus community action in support of -- our next female generation.
5 Girls is an unprecedented collaboration between
Kartemquin Educational Films, American Documentary's Television Race Initiative
(now called "Active Voice"), policy makers, public television stations, community based organizations and foundations. The project will include the development of eight Local Girl Networks that will mobilize community activism, a web campaign that will include an on-line "Local Girl Tool Kit," and a strategic communications campaign.
