Project: Geena Takes Aim
Grantee: Women's Sports Foundation
Grant Year: 2000
There are thousands of girls in the United States whose passion to play
isn't being respected because of their sex. Far too often, however, they
are not equipped with the knowledge and resources to speak up and demand
what they are, by law, entitled to. The mission of the Women's Sports
Foundation is to promote the lifelong participation of all girls and women
in sports and fitness, and to create an educated public that encourages
females' participation and supports gender equality. The Three Guineas Fund
is helping the Women's Sports Foundation with a $30,000 seed grant to
support Geena Takes Aim.
Geena Takes Aim Internet content area on
WomensSportsFoundation.org is being
created as a cooperative effort between the Women's Sports Foundation and
Olympic-hopeful archer and actress Geena Davis, to educate student-athletes
about their rights, according to Title IX. This interactive content area
will lead them through the most effective process for ensuring fair
treatment in athletics. Highlights of the site include a comprehensive guide
to Title IX, a collection of true stories in which the Foundation helped
parents or athletes confront sex discrimination in sport called "Geena's
Unbelievables," a forum to share experiences, and a guide for media coverage
of women's sports. Geena Davis is taking aim because one unjustly
shattered athletic dream is one shattered dream too many.
