Project: Brave Little Girls
Year of Inception: 1997
From fall of 1995 to March of 1996, Krystyna Wasserman acted as curator for the exhibit Brave Little Girls at the
National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. This revolutionary art exhibit included fifty-eight books about girls and young women of courage. In this exhibit, fictional as well as real heroines are particularly celebrated for their traits of courage, accomplishment and a willingness to take risks and challenge the adult world.
The Three Guineas Fund recognized the potential with this exhibit and collaborated with the San Francisco Public Library, the San Francisco Library Foundation, and numerous community-based organizations to bring the exhibit to San Francisco. These groups created an array of programming and teaching aids to entertain and educate children ages 8 to 12; to provide role models for girls and boys; and to encourage creativity through reading, drawing pictures, and writing stories. Unique to the Brave Little Girls exhibit in the Bay Area was an accompanying exhibition of children's books and illustrations representing the Bay Area's diversity. In addition, the exhibition was designed to instruct children about the artistic process, pointing out the differences between original illustrations and printed pictures.
Programs at the library in conjunction with the exhibit included a series entitled BraveArt: Seeing and Doing: Art by Women, Art by You. In this program, trained docents show how artists illustrate their life experiences in children's books. This program took place at almost all branches of the SF Public Library system. In addition, by timing the exhibition start with the school year, public and private school outreach was possible as well as a partnership with "Word for Word" which included select readings at branch libraries.
